The Heart of an Albatross
Acrylic on board with black frame
1220mm x 1220mm x 50mm
June 2024
The Albatross, known for its incredible ability to fly long distances, effortlessly glides over the vast ocean, exploring beyond the horizon with its wings outstretched, catching the wind, and yet always returns to its familiar nesting grounds.
"The Heart of an Albatross" is a self-portrait inspired by a place I frequent—"my place"—where I sit to gather thoughts, process, and find clarity or a grounding of emotions. It speaks to the balance between the desire to explore and the comfort of home. This piece captures a delicate interplay of adventure and homecoming, encapsulating the essence of longing and the reassurance of a place to return to.
The eyes of the figure are concealed, depicting the notion that the truth of our thoughts is contained within ourselves. We select what we present to the outer world, keeping hidden the parts we choose to edit. Eyes often give insight into those thoughts and emotions, and by hiding the eyes of the figure, we can't be certain or accurately read what is running through her mind as she sits on the rock. Instead, we make assumptions based on our own thoughts and experiences.
